Something to think about, Aros with 960 processors and OpenCL please.
| | Time to think about GPU computing and Aros for the future, this is a long term project but then so is Aros. |
We have discussed on this support site (www.aros-exec.org) the fact that Aros NEEDS Multi-Core support to have any chance of competing in the real world. Well this is absolutely true, but there is another thing we need to think of that is equally important and could hold the key to a comeback for the Amiga.
Most of you are aware that GPU computing IS the future of speed increases in modern computers and that by plugging in a graphics card from AMD or NVidia we can add 16, 64 or 960 or many more extras processing cores into the mix, running at around 1.3ghz each.
Now what does this mean, basically there is a chance for the Amiga community to leap frog our current speed problems into an area where power is available to all. Yes, I understand the driver issues but they are available on Linux and I am sure with a concerted effort they could be made to work on Aros. Obviously this would need to be the 64 bit version of Aros as well.
Apple has just launched Snow Leopard and in the announcement is a word we all need to sit up and take notice of, OpenCL. Apple are making a big thing of this and rightly so, even though their actual computer have very few cores as standard.
So, I believe that OpenCL is the future and we need to embrace it. I say this as somebody who does understand the implications and the problems but a challenge is always good is it not. I would love to see the next iMica with 128 or more cores.
Any way back to reality and my new Water cooled Linux supercomputer plans.
